Fifty top Australians for €20? You could do a lot worse.
Nip along to Fallon & Byrne on the 24th of November and taste John Wilson's top 50 Australian wines for the price of three pints. You might even get something to snack on thrown in for free.
John Wilson, should you not keep up with the Times, is the wine writer for said newspaper, and when we last chatted at the Marks & Spencer tasting he was hinting that his selection included a few rather special wines that you may not normally have the good fortune to taste.
"Where do you find these wines?", my class at the Irish Wine Institute sometimes exclaim when we've just tasted a particularly nice wine that surprised them with its price tag.
The answer, of course, is that, during the autumn "tasting season" from mid-September to mid-November, I taste at least two hundred different wines per month at the various trade- and press tastings that I get invited to. Rather a few less than the gentlepeople of the printed press, I've noticed, but I'm a slow taster. And I like it that way.
There's no substitute for exposure. You too can, by several tens of bottles, broaden the spectrum of wines that you are likely to taste before Christmas. The Top 50 tasting will take place from half six to nine (PM) on November the 24th. Give it a go!
